The pump itself could be failing, or there could be a significant leak somewhere in the system that prevents it from building pressure. Sometimes, the issue is electrical, like a faulty pressure switch sending a false signal.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Check the Reservoir: Your first step should always be to check the oil level. Ensure it is at the recommended mark.
    • Inspect Filters: Check the main system filter. If it is dirty or clogged, replace it. Many systems have a filter condition indicator.
    • Look for Major Leaks: Do a quick visual inspection around the machine for puddles of oil that would indicate a burst hose or failed fitting.
    • Check the Pressure Gauge: Manually observe the system’s pressure gauge (if equipped) during operation. Does it drop suddenly or fail to reach the specified pressure (often indicated by a green zone on the gauge)?

2. The Slow Drip: Oil Leaks

Oil leaks are more than just a housekeeping nuisance and a safety hazard (slip-and-fall risk). A persistent leak starves components of lubrication, wastes expensive fluids, and can damage other parts of the machine, like electrical cables and seals.

  • Causes: Leaks often start at fittings and connections. Over time, vibration can cause threaded fittings to loosen. Hydraulic and lubrication lines, especially those that flex with machine movement, can become brittle and crack. Seals within hydraulic cylinders, way covers, or around rotating shafts are also common failure points.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Clean and Observe: The hardest part of fixing a leak is finding its source. Thoroughly clean the suspected area of all oil and grime. Then, operate the machine and watch closely for where the first drip appears. Using a UV dye kit can make this process much easier.
    • Tighten Fittings: Gently tighten any suspect fittings. Be careful not to overtighten, as this can damage the threads or crush the seals, making the leak worse.
    • Inspect Hoses: Carefully examine all hoses for cracks, abrasion, or bulging, especially near the fittings or where they bend.

3. Too Much of a Good Thing: Excessive Lubrication

While a lack of oil is dangerous, using too much can create its own set of problems. It’s wasteful, creates a mess that attracts chips and grime, and can be detrimental to the machining process.

  • Causes: This is often the result of an incorrectly set lubrication timer or pump. In automatic systems, the cycle time might be too frequent, or the volume per cycle might be set too high. It can also happen if an operator is manually lubricating components and applies far more grease or oil than necessary.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Review Machine Parameters: Check the lubrication settings in your CNC control. Consult the machine’s manual for the recommended cycle time and duration for your specific application.
    • Check for Stuck Metering Units: On some systems, individual metering units (or “injectors”) can get stuck in the open position, continuously sending oil to one location. If one area is getting flooded with oil while others are dry, this is a likely cause.
    • Coolant Contamination: Excessive way lube will end up in your coolant tank. This leads to the formation of “tramp oil,” which reduces coolant performance, promotes bacteria growth, and can cause skin irritation for operators. If you see a thick layer of oil on top of your coolant, you may be over-lubricating.
